Today, the last Wednesday of Novruz holiday - Ilakhir Charshanba (Earth Wednesday) is celebrated.
Aztəhsil.az reminds that, unlike other Wednesdays, the people celebrate the last Wednesday with special solemnity.
On Ilakhir Charshanba, the all-day ceremony intensifies with evening festivities. Wild rue is burned, bonfires are lit, people jump over bonfires, bags are hung from chimneys, belts are thrown, and ear-dropping rituals are performed.
On the last Wednesday, everyone, regardless of age and gender, must jump over the bonfire; the bonfire must not be extinguished, and after it extinguishes itself, young men and women must collect its ashes and throw them outside, away from the house. This means that the misfortunes of all family members who jumped over the bonfire are removed from the family along with the discarded ashes. On the evening of the last Wednesday, it is customary to speak only good words.
According to ancient folk customs and beliefs, on that day, salt, water, money, bread, fire, matches, oil, or dairy products are not given out from the house. On the last Wednesday, candles are lit according to the number of family members, and according to custom, candles are not extinguished halfway. Also, on the night of the last Wednesday, one should go to sleep with a wish in their heart. It is said that you must celebrate the last Wednesday night of the year in your own home. Otherwise, you will celebrate Novruz in a different place for seven consecutive years.
