Aztəhsil.az reports that students in Turkey's Kütahya region paid off the debts of all students in their school, continuing the "Zimem Defteri" tradition inherited from the Ottoman Empire.

What is the Zimem Defteri?

During Ramadan days in the Ottoman Empire, the wealthy would go to merchant shops in regions they did not know at all and ask them to bring out the Zimem Defteri, which is the credit ledger.

They would randomly calculate the totals of pages from the beginning, end, and middle, say “Erase their debts… May Allah accept it,” and then leave. The debtor whose debt was paid would not know who paid their debt, and the one who paid the debt would not know whom they had freed from debt.
