March 6 marks the commemoration day of Mammad Amin Rasulzade, one of the founders of the first democratic republic in the East - the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Aztəhsil.az reports that M.A. Rasulzade passed away on March 6, 1955, at the clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University.

  • M.A. Rasulzade was born on January 31, 1884, in the village of Novkhani, Baku. 

His father enrolled him in the second "Russian-Muslim" school, which was headed by the renowned pedagogue Sultan Majid Ganizade. After graduating from there, Mammad Amin continued his education at the Baku Technical School.

  • In 1902, at the age of 17, he founded the "Muslim Youth Organization". 

This was the first political organization in Azerbaijan that secretly fought against the Russian colonial administration in the 20th century.

  • In the autumn of 1917, M.A. Rasulzade was elected a deputy to the Russian parliament from Azerbaijan and Turkestan. 
  • On May 26, 1918, the Transcaucasian Seim was dissolved due to internal factional disputes. On the 27th of the same month, the Azerbaijan National Council was formed, consisting of members from various parties belonging to the Muslim faction of the Seim. M.A. Rasulzade was elected chairman of the National Council by a majority vote.
  • He rendered invaluable service in the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918. 

However, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic lasted only 23 months.

After the occupation of Azerbaijan by Soviet Russia on April 28, 1920, M.A. Rasulzade was forced to leave his homeland. He had to live abroad for a long time.

  • He passed away on March 6, 1955, at the clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University. 

Rasulzade's grave is located in the Asri Cemetery in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.
